Initially knitted using Rico Luxury Alpaca Superfine yarn this hat pattern fits a variety of head sizes and is easy and fun to modify.
Our cream hat (shade 001 of Rico Luxury Alpaca Superfine) features a ribbed brim and is closer fitting.
The charcoal grey hat (shade now discontinued, but try shade 004 instead) has no rib and a slouchy shape.
The pattern includes instructions for both hats. You can mix and match styles too - rib and slouchy, no rib and closer fitting.
The hat is knitted in the round on circular needles. So you don’t need to sew it up. It’s a good first project for those new to knitting in the round. Our pattern also includes some top tips and ideas for modifying the basic design.
One way to change the hat is to use Rowan Alpaca Classic. As this is a thinner yarn than Rico Luxury Alpaca Superfine you will need to use two strands of yarn held together.
We used shade 129 Hyacinth. This is a great way to create some interesting colour combos too, by pairing similar or contrasting shades together.
And as this is such a simple pattern, it’s a good way to practice holding more than one strand of yarn... an increasingly popular technique.
All three hats feature a lightweight Rico Faux Fur Pom Pom. For the cream hat, we added a Pom Pom in colour 001. For the charcoal hat we added a bright pop of orange (shade 014) and we used a baby pink (Shade 019) for the Alpaca Classic hat. You can see our full colour range here.
Obviously a Pom Pom is optional. The hat looks really good without one!

Measures - fits variety of sizes, approx up to 23cm head.
Yarn - 1 ball of Rico Superfine Alpaca or 2 balls of Rowan Alpaca Classic.
Needle size - circular 6mm x 40cm with Rico Alpaca Superfine or 5mm x 40cm for Rowan Alpaca Classic. Click for our circular needle selection.
You will also need a wool needle. Pom Pom optional!
Techniques - cast on loosely; work in the round; knit; purl; knit 2 together (K2tog); fasten off stitches.
