unfinished knitting projects

A monthly update of all the projects piling up on and under my coffee table. You can read all previous months here.

This month I've got a few finished projects and two new projects.

Finished ones include a new version of our free Simple Hat pattern and two mini versions of our free Asymmetrical and Side to Side scarves. I also finished my Bao Bao shawl too.

Two new projects include a lace sock and a new 4ply t-shirt.

I am also just finishing the main part of my Bréid shawl.

colourwork shawl

Bréid by Kate Davies is a small triangle which can worn as a cowl or headscarf.

It's available as a single digital pattern on Ravelry or part of her Knitting Wester Ross book.

It has an all over stranded colourwork pattern with garter stitch and i-cord edges and i-cord ties.

I'm using Kinross 4ply in Cromarty and Quartz.

Bréid is knitted in the round with decreases at the start and end of each round.

The vertical stripes are steek stitches. Extra stitches that I'll use to cut open the tube to make a flat triangle shape. You can read more about steeks in April's WiP.

I've done a wee bit more since this photo was taken and I'm just about to cast off. Then I'll need to look out the good scissors.

I've also started a lace sock, Winter Rose Socks designed by Helen Stewart.

The pattern is available to buy on Ravelry or as a digital pattern in the Pittenweem shop.

pink lace sock

It's a shop sample to show off our new Armonia 4ply. I'm using shade 1213 which is a cool icy pink.

It's been ages since I knitted a lacy sock and this one is straightforward - just an 8 stitch repeat over a 5 row repeat. There's only 2 rows where you're actually making holes.

Helen Stewart's patterns are written out line by line and the lace pattern is written and charted. For for these socks each size is written out fully so don't be alarmed when you see how many pages there are.

I'm just finishing the gusset decreases and then it'll be round and round for the foot. Hopefully the sock will be in the shop very soon.

It will definitely benefit from blocking to open up the lace holes.

I'm liking the Armonia so much - super smooth, soft and gleaming - that I cast on a cheeky wee t-shirt striping the merino 4ply with a mohair silk laceweight.

grey stripe t-shirt

This is Purple Moon by Isabell Kraemer. You can buy the pattern on Ravelry or as a digital pattern in the Pittenweem shop.

It's knitted seamlessly from the top down and combines a 4ply and a laceweight yarn in 12 row stripes. You can of course vary the thickness of the stripes.

I'm using light grey shade 434 in Armonia 4ply and dark grey 1175 in Silk Kid Mohair.

It has knitted up so fast even though its done on 3.5mm needles. It's not like Summer Light or Tolsta Tee which knitted up fast on 5mm needles. I guess it's another example that stripes (even broad ones) do make me knit more.😆

Combining these fine fibres is making a very light and soft tee shirt. A great top for summer but also for layering in winter. Excited to show you all this one!

I have been working on my neon pink mohair scarf but to be honest it doesn't look like it! The rows are very long now so an hour of kitting doesn't make much impact.😆

Now to the finished projects...

knitted stripe shawl

This is a Bao Bao Shawl. Designed by Isabell Kraemer, the pattern is available to buy on Ravelry or as a digital pattern in the Pittenweem shop.

I used John Arbon Yarnadelic Sport. It's a 100% Falklands Corriedale wool - a woolly wool but still soft. You need 3 colours. I used one skein each of Ordinary Joe (stoney beige), Blue Monday (denim blue) and Toxic (neon green).

It's great fun to knit. A quirky stitch pattern AND stripes obviously make it a quicker knit.

You can read more about it here and try it out in the Pittenweem shop.

Another new sample in the shop is a version of our free Simple DK Hat pattern using our newest yarn - Symfonie Viva DK, a hand dyed superwash merino in Spring Blush.

You can read about it here where I talk about pooling.

I've also whipped up two mini versions of our super popular free scarf patterns.

One is a Mini Asymmetrical Scarf and another is a Mini Side to Side Scarf.

Both are knitted in DK weight yarn and as they're super quick to make they make great palette cleansers or gifts as well as stash busters.

The Mini Asymmetrical Scarf uses just one ball of another of our new yarns - Lang Cashmere Premium. I used shade 028 a shockingly bright watermelon shade. Cashmere Premium is a sport/DK weight yarn. It comes in 25g balls with 115m per ball.

This mini version is basically the same pattern as the 4ply/400m version except it's just much smaller. I have written a mini version pattern and you can directly download it here.

There's also a mini version of our Simple Side to Side Scarf. It uses just one 50g/112m ball of WYS Elements DK.

The Side to Side Scarf starts with a few stitches and you increase up one side to a mid point. You then decrease back down to a few stitches.

For the 4ply/100g version the pattern is worked over 4 rows.

The mini version is different - the pattern is worked over 8 rows to give a shallower longer scarf with less yarn.

I made another one using Rico Meri Mohair.

Meri Mohair is a wool mohair blend so it's got a bit of fluff. It's also got loads more meterage on a 50g ball. I didn't knit the whole ball, instead I knitted it to the same size as the Elements one.

If I had kitted the full ball the scarf would have been ridiculously long! In the end I used less than half a ball.
