mustard yellow kids jumper

Glenmore Mini is a kid sized version of Ysolda's Glenmore Aran sweater.

The kid sizes start at 2-3 years and go up to 11-12 years.

It's knitted from the top-down and features drop shoulders and an easy to work dot stitch pattern. If you can do a K1, P1 rib you can do this stitch pattern.

It is designed to have an oversized fit but there's a detailed schematic including neck and cuff widths so you can confidently pick the right size for you.

The pattern has instructions for two yarn weights - aran and chunky.

Our aran weight version uses King Cole Wool Aran. It's a 100% machine washable wool and comes in a range of shades. It plumps up and softens when washed making a squishy hardwearing fabric.

The pattern is clearly written although Sue, who knitted our Glenmore Mini, did say it was a leap of faith in the beginning as you shape the shoulders back and forth before joining to knit in the round.

You'll use stitch markers to help you maintain the shoulder line increases. These increases are made using lifted increases.

We used lifted increases in the Fern and Feather jumper. They were practically invisible amongst the stranded colourwork pattern.

The lifted increases in Glenmore Mini produce a lovely defined line at the shoulders. Don't worry if you've never worked lifted increases as Ysolda has a tutorial on her website (scroll down for a video which makes it all super clear).

As this jumper has drop shoulders and is constructed from the top-down you'll be working back and forth at the beginning, then in the round, then you'll work on the back and front separately back and forth and then you'll be back in the round for the body. This can seem daunting but it does produce a lovely finish to the garment - there's no sewing up!

The sleeves are worked in the round too either with DPNs or using a long circular needle for magic loop.

Glenmore - mini and adult - comes in a wide range of sizes and 2 yarn weights. You can buy the patterns individually on Ravelry and on Ysolda's website or you can buy it as a bundle on Ravelry or on Ysolda's website.

If you're a bit wary of knitting adult garments, knitting a child size is a great way to try without a big commitment. Glenmore Mini uses all the same techniques as the adult version.
